As part of the Art in Action initiative by the Graffiti Park Foundation, a new mural now adds color and creativity to the campus of Thurman White Middle School—proof that even the smallest spaces can become powerful expressions of student voice and school spirit.
This project was curated by Graffiti Park in close collaboration with students from Thurman White’s Urban Arts Program. Under the guidance of Graffiti Park artist CKW Artistry, students brought their ideas to life through hands-on mural work, learning techniques and storytelling through visual art along the way.
The canvas? A simple utility box just outside the school. But with vision and teamwork, it became something much more.
The finished mural features a drama mask, paintbrushes, a dancer in motion, and a knight mask—each representing the different artistic disciplines celebrated within the school. The knight mask also serves as a subtle nod to Thurman White’s mascot, tying the artwork to school identity and pride.
Through Art in Action, students don’t just observe or learn about art—they participate in it. They create it. They leave their mark.
Projects like this demonstrate the mission of the Graffiti Park Foundation: to empower youth through public art and hands-on collaboration. For the students at Thurman White, this mural isn’t just decoration—it’s a symbol of their creativity, their teamwork, and their ability to shape the space around them.
And for anyone walking by, it’s a vibrant reminder that the arts are alive and well—and led by the next generation.
